Pattern Information: Cintamani Motif

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Cintamani motif was a symbolic motif of Central Asian origin and had a long history in Turkish culture. Cintamani is derived from the Sanskrit word “cita” (leopard) and symbolizes strength, speed, and intelligence. The motif generally consists of three stars and wavy lines and is repeated in a symmetrical arrangement.

The use of the Cintamani motif was common in the Ottoman Empire because it represented power and success. This motif was frequently used in the decoration of palaces, mosques, tombs, and other important structures. It was also often seen on fabrics, carpets, and ceramics.

The meaning of the Cintamani motif is associated with strength, speed, intelligence, and success. It can also symbolize wealth, abundance, and prosperity. Cintamani motifs in Iznik ceramics are generally used for aesthetic purposes and add depth and visual appeal to spaces with their decorative qualities:

This motif is considered an important part of the artistic heritage of the Ottoman Empire and still appears today in Turkish ceramic art and design.

Production process of Iznik ceramic prayer beads: The clay of the prayer bead stones is prepared with a special mixture. When the clay reaches the proper consistency, each piece is rolled by hand one by one and shaped into a prayer bead. During the drying process, a hole is opened in the bead and it is left to dry again. After drying, painting artists place the beads one by one on toothpicks and begin decorating them with a fine brush. To obtain 33 prayer beads, approximately 75 beads are decorated. (The loss in the kiln is quite high.) After the glazing process is completed, the beads are left to rest. The beads ready for firing are placed one by one on wires inside the special ceramic kiln and fired at 800–1000 °C. The firing process takes one day and the cooling process also takes one day. From the beads taken out of the kiln, 33 of the most perfect pieces are selected and strung to take their final form. Length from the imam bead: 28 cm. Bead size: 1 cm x 1 cm.
