There are many glaze cracks on the product. These cracks are not noticeable from a distance of 2 meters.
The product you order is a completely handmade Iznik ceramic piece. As you know, ceramics are covered with glaze. Cracking may occur on the glaze surface, and this is natural for Iznik ceramics. Glaze cracks have also formed on the historical Iznik tiles inside the Selimiye Mosque. A glaze crack is definitely not a defect.
Shahdar, meaning cracks in ceramic, is an Ottoman word meaning branched or ramified. In ceramic works, the cracks that occur on the glass-like glaze surface due to humidity and moisture are called Shahdar. Every ceramic piece may develop Shahdar one day; some within a few days, others after centuries. This is similar to the wrinkles that inevitably appear as people age.
Ottoman artists assigned different meanings to every motif and color they applied to ceramics, and for Shahdar they said: “Just as the skin of human beings wrinkles as they age, ceramic develops Shahdar.”
